STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE THE A.K.C. BREED STANDARD DESCRIBES THE
BEAGLE AS A LIVELY, TIRELESS HUNTER THAT HAS A WARM PERSONALITY, AS WELL AS
ADMIRABLE COURAGE AND STAMINA. THIS SMALL HOUND IS EXCELLENT WITH CHILDREN,
AND REQUIRES LOTS OF EXERSIZE AND TRAINING. HEAD: The beagle skull should be fairly long and
slightly domed, with a broad and full cranium. Ears are set moderately low
and long, reaching, when drawn out, nearly to the end of the nose, and set
forward slightly. The beagle’s brown or hazel eyes are large and set sell
apart, soft and hound like. BODY: The strong neck rises free from the
shoulders. The throat should be clean with out any folds of skin, however, a
slight wrinkle below the angle of the jaw is allowable. The dog’s muscular
shoulders slope onto the back, which is short, muscular and
strong. FORELEGS AND FEET: Forelegs should be straight, with plenty of
bone in proportion to the beagle’s size. Feet are close, round and firm, and
the paw pads are full and hard. COAT AND COLOR: A beagle’s coat is close and hard and of
medium length. It can be any true hound color. TAIL: The tail is set moderately high and carried
cheerfully, but not turned forward over the back. A Beagle's tail has a
slight curve and is short in proportion to the hound’s size. The tail should
have a brush of fur toward the tip. HEIGHT: Beagle’s come in two height varieties; not
more than 13 inches (at the shoulder) and not more than 15 inches. |
